Do you really want to pay $36,000 for an 11-12 year-old truck?

To do what? Promote their brand name, paint your truck in their colours, wear their uniform & do the jobs they tell you to!

The advert above is from the October 2006 Sydney Trading Post. That's cheap for a franchise, we've seen them advertised as high as $125,000 plus expenses. In fairness to them you get the truck plus you're in their system. Which means they send you the work, do the marketing, etc.

They also send jobs to all their other franchisees, that's OK though as long as there's plenty of work for you. Being a 5+5 franchise presumably you'll have to cough up another $36,000 in five years time, but that's ok, you're part of "Australia's Only National Rubbish Company" or that's what they claimed on their website at the time of writing this!

I wonder what the old Daihatsu will be worth in five years time?

If you read through some of the franchised operators websites they appear a bit condescending. One of the sites implies that independent rubbish contractors are inferior or dodgy and another would have you believe that they are the only people able to operate a successful rubbish removal business.

Some of the franchise companies are not Australian owned and we all remember a few years ago when one of the franchisors was in administration and all of their trucks disappeared suddenly!
